SSD Lifespan: How Long Do SSDs Actually Last?

You have heard SSDs wear out after too many writes and want to know how worried to be. This applies to internal and external SATA and NVMe SSDs in desktops, laptops, and enclosures on Windows and Mac.

Does This Affect You?

SSDs do wear with writes, but normal use rarely reaches modern endurance limits quickly. Sudden defects, firmware problems, or power loss are often a bigger practical risk than slowly using up write endurance.

How SSD Wear Actually Works

Endurance ratings explain why typical users have lots of headroom.

  • SSD memory cells wear slightly each time data is written.
  • TBW, or terabytes written, estimates how much data can be written over the drive life. Consumer SSDs may be rated around 150TBW to 600TBW or more depending on capacity and model.
  • Most everyday users write far less than that per year through browsing, documents, app installs, and normal photos or videos.
  • Heavy workloads such as video editing, databases, constant caches, virtual machines, and large transfers can use endurance faster.
  • Wear leveling spreads writes across cells automatically, so you do not need to manage it manually.

Check the Health of Your Specific Drive

Read the drive data instead of relying on averages.

  1. Use the manufacturer utility when available, such as Samsung Magician, Crucial Storage Executive, or WD Dashboard.
  2. On Windows, CrystalDiskInfo can show SMART status, health percentage, temperature, and wear attributes.
  3. On Mac, Disk Utility and System Information show basic SMART status, though often less detail.
  4. Look for attributes such as Percentage Used or Media Wearout Indicator.
  5. Treat rising wear as a reason to back up and budget for replacement, not as proof the drive will fail immediately.

Keep at least 10 to 20 percent of an SSD free when possible. Very full SSDs can slow down and have less working space for the controller. Old advice about disabling normal Windows services to “save” SSD writes is mostly outdated for modern drives.

Power loss during active writes can corrupt data, especially on external drives. Use safely eject before unplugging external SSDs and consider a UPS for desktops. Even a healthy SSD can fail suddenly, so regular backups matter regardless of the health percentage.
