Samsung Phone Screen Problems: Flickering, Lines, and Unresponsive Touch

Samsung screen flickering lines and touch problems illustration

Samsung screen flicker, colored lines, ghost touches, or dead touch spots can come from software, a bad screen protector, pressure from a case, moisture, app glitches, or a damaged display panel. Start with the simple physical checks.

These steps apply to Galaxy S, A, Z, Note, and other Samsung phones running One UI.

Does This Affect You?

Use this if the display flickers, shows stable colored lines, ignores taps in one area, or registers touches you did not make.

Rule Out Simple Causes

  1. Restart the phone.
  2. Remove the case and screen protector temporarily.
  3. Clean the display with a dry microfiber cloth.
  4. Turn off Motion smoothness by setting it to Standard if flicker continues.
  5. Turn off Eye comfort shield or blue light filtering for testing.
  6. Install updates from Settings > Software update.
  7. If the issue happens in one app only, update or uninstall that app.

Run Samsung Diagnostics

  1. Open the Samsung Members app.
  2. Tap Get help.
  3. Open Diagnostics or Interactive checks.
  4. Run Touch Screen and Display tests.
  5. For touch testing, tap every grid square and note dead areas.
  6. For display testing, look for fixed lines, color patches, or dead pixels.
  7. You can also dial *#0*# on some models and use Touch or color tests.

When It Looks Like Hardware

A line that stays in the exact same place across every app, a crack you can feel, or a touch dead zone that remains in Safe Mode points toward panel or digitizer damage. Software settings usually cannot fix that.

Before Repair

  • Back up the phone before service.
  • Use Samsung Members to request repair or locate an authorized service center.
  • If the device is being replaced rather than repaired, remove screen lock and Google account when instructed so activation locks do not block reuse.
