How to Run Ethernet Cable Through Your House

Running Ethernet is a real home project, but it is manageable when you have attic, crawlspace, or basement access. Those routes let you add wired connections without opening large sections of finished wall.

Use this if a room only has Wi-Fi and you want a permanent wired connection for a computer, TV, access point, game console, NAS, or office setup.

Before you start

Low-voltage wiring is simpler than electrical work, but the house around it still deserves respect.

  • Keep Ethernet several inches away from electrical wiring, and cross electrical lines at 90 degrees when crossing is unavoidable.
  • In attics, watch heat, stay hydrated, and step only on joists or walking boards, never drywall or insulation.
  • Check for pipes and electrical wiring before cutting or drilling into a wall.
  • Shut off nearby power circuits before drilling near outlets or switches.
  • Use a stud finder and go slowly through the first inch of wall or ceiling.
  • Call a low-voltage installer if the route is finished, unsafe, or outside your comfort level.

Run cable through an attic or crawlspace

This is the standard approach for permanent home Ethernet drops.

  1. Buy solid-core Cat6 cable for in-wall runs. Stranded cable is for short patch cords.
  2. Plan each route from the router, switch, or patch-panel location to the rooms that need jacks.
  3. Drill through the wall top plate from the attic, or route from below through a crawlspace or basement.
  4. Feed cable with fish tape or a weighted pull string.
  5. Leave several extra feet at both ends before cutting.
  6. Terminate each end into keystone jacks or a patch panel using the color diagram on the jack.
  7. Test every run with a cable tester before closing anything up.
  8. Label both ends of every cable.

More control

Choose Cat6 for new permanent runs

Cat5e still works for many home speeds, but Cat6 gives more room for future speed and costs little more when you are already doing the labor.

Check existing coax first

If the house already has coax in several rooms, MoCA adapters may provide wired-like networking without pulling new Ethernet.

Use a patch panel for several rooms

Do not daisy-chain Ethernet room to room. Home runs to a small patch panel or switch are easier to expand and troubleshoot.

Hire help for difficult finished routes

A low-voltage cabling installer can often add several drops in a day, especially when finished walls make DIY fishing frustrating or risky.
