Rest Mode is a low-power standby state, not a full shutdown. It can keep downloads running, charge a DualSense, and wake quickly, but those features depend on separate settings.
These steps apply to PS5 and PS5 Slim or Pro consoles on current system software.
Does this affect you?
Use this if downloads stop in Rest Mode, controllers do not charge, the PS5 wakes itself, or the console refuses to enter Rest Mode.
Turn on the Rest Mode features you actually want
Downloads and USB charging each have their own standby toggle.
- Open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet for downloads and updates during Rest Mode.
- Turn on Supply Power to USB Ports for controller or accessory charging.
- Choose the USB power duration or level you prefer if the option appears.
- Press the PS button, choose Power, and select Enter Rest Mode.
- Check whether the expected download or charging behavior now continues.
If Stay Connected to the Internet is off, updates pausing when the screen goes dark is expected behavior.
Stop the console waking itself up unexpectedly
Unwanted wakeups are usually caused by a controller, accessory, media remote, or HDMI setting.
- Review Rest Mode settings for controller wake options.
- Move paired controllers where buttons cannot be pressed accidentally.
- Disconnect USB accessories one at a time, including external drives, chargers, and headsets.
- Reconnect accessories one by one to identify the device that wakes the console.
- Check TV HDMI-CEC settings if turning on the TV wakes the PS5.
- Fully charge or replace the battery in any controller that behaves erratically.
HDMI-CEC can be convenient, but it can also wake the PS5 when another HDMI device or the TV powers on.
Fix a PS5 that won’t enter Rest Mode at all
Use these steps if choosing Rest Mode does nothing, freezes briefly, or leaves the console fully on.
- Open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings and install any update.
- Let critical game or system downloads finish.
- Restart the console fully from the system menu.
- Try entering Rest Mode immediately after restart.
- If it still fails, hold the power button for about 7 seconds to shut down completely.
- Unplug the console for one full minute, reconnect it, and test again.
If the console freezes when trying to rest, boot into Safe Mode and run Rebuild Database. Corrupted system data can show up during power-state changes.
Power use note
Rest Mode intentionally keeps network, USB power, and other small parts of the console awake. Turn off internet and USB standby features, or fully shut down the console, when you do not need background downloads or charging.
