A PS4 controller that will not connect is often stuck with old pairing information from another PS4, PC, phone, or a failed low-battery session. Resetting it and pairing over USB usually fixes the problem.
These steps apply to DualShock 4 controllers and PS4 consoles.

Use this if the controller will not pair, connects briefly and disconnects, or flashes without controlling the PS4.
Reset the controller
Resetting clears the controller’s pairing memory without deleting anything on the console.
- Turn the controller over and find the small reset pinhole near the L2 trigger.
- Use a paperclip or SIM eject tool to hold the button for about 5 seconds.
- Connect the controller to the PS4 with a USB cable that supports data.
- Press the PS button on the controller.
- Wait for the controller to register through USB.
Some cheap USB cables are power-only. They can charge a controller but cannot pair it, so try a known data cable if the PS button still does nothing.
Re-pair the controller from scratch
After the reset, remove stale Bluetooth entries and register the controller again.
- Keep the controller connected by USB.
- Open Settings > Devices > Bluetooth Devices on the PS4.
- If the old controller entry appears, select it and choose Forget This Device or Delete.
- Press the PS button again while the controller is still wired.
- Once it shows connected, unplug USB and press PS again to test wireless pairing.
This is especially important if the controller was last used with a different console or Bluetooth device.
Check the battery and cable
A dead battery or bad cable can look like a pairing problem.
- Leave the controller connected with a known-good cable for at least 30 minutes.
- Look for the orange charging light bar.
- Try a different cable if no light appears.
- Try a different USB port on the PS4 and avoid hubs.
- Test a second controller if you have one to see whether the console Bluetooth is working.
Other nearby Bluetooth devices can occasionally interfere during pairing. Turn off nearby headphones, speakers, or phones temporarily while you pair the DualShock 4.
If no controller connects
If multiple controllers fail on the same PS4, fully power off the console and boot into Safe Mode by holding the power button until the second beep. Choose Rebuild Database, which repairs the system file index without deleting games or saves.
While Bluetooth is unreliable, a USB data cable can keep the controller usable for gameplay. It is not only a charging cable when it supports data.
