Most Windows 11 PCs activate with a digital license, but there are still times when you may want the 25-character product key: a reinstall, edition check, support case, or retail license transfer.
This applies to Windows 11 PCs that came with Windows installed, were upgraded from Windows 10, or were activated with a separately purchased license.
Does This Affect You?
Where the key lives depends on how Windows was licensed. Newer manufacturer PCs often store the OEM key in motherboard firmware. Upgraded PCs may have no separate Windows 11 key at all because the digital license is tied to hardware or your Microsoft account.
Retrieve the Embedded Key with PowerShell
- Open Start, search for PowerShell, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator.
- Run the command below.
- If a 25-character key appears, store it somewhere private, such as a password manager.
- If the result is blank, the PC likely uses a digital license or was upgraded from an earlier Windows version.

- If you bought Windows from Microsoft, sign in at
account.microsoft.com/servicesand check purchases or subscriptions. - Search your email for the Microsoft Store receipt or Windows purchase confirmation.
- For a physical retail copy, check the box, card, or scratch-off label that came with it.
- If the PC upgraded from Windows 10, check Settings > System > Activation; it may simply show a digital license.
Look for a Physical Sticker
- Check the bottom of a laptop, side/back of a desktop tower, or paperwork from the PC maker.
- If a sticker exists, it may match the embedded OEM key.
- Do not be surprised if newer PCs have no sticker; firmware and digital licenses are now more common.

Digital License vs Product Key
If Activation says Windows is activated with a digital license, you usually do not need a key to reinstall on the same hardware.
Edition Must Match
A Home key activates Home, and a Pro key activates Pro. Check your edition under Settings > System > About before reinstalling.
Store It Privately
A Windows key is sensitive. Keep it in a password manager or private record, not taped to the computer.
If No Method Finds a Key
That usually means there is no separate key to recover. Contact Microsoft or the PC maker only if you specifically need transferable licensing details.
