Printers can be fussier than phones because many only support 2.4 GHz, use awkward password entry screens, and sometimes lose network contact after router restarts or sleep mode.
Does this affect you?
Use this for Wi-Fi inkjet and laser printers that cannot find the network, fail password entry, connect then drop, or cannot be found by phones and computers.
Restart and reconnect
This clears many post-router-change printer problems.
- Turn the printer off with its power button, wait 30 seconds, and turn it back on.
- Restart the router by unplugging it for 30 seconds, then waiting a couple of minutes after plugging it in.
- On the printer screen, open Wireless Setup, Network Settings, or Wi-Fi Setup Wizard.
- Select your Wi-Fi network and carefully enter the password. Watch uppercase, symbols, and spaces.
- Print a network report or test page from Setup > Reports or Network Settings > Print Report to confirm the printer received an IP address.
Check the Wi-Fi band
Older and budget printers often need 2.4 GHz.
- Look up the printer model specs and confirm whether it supports only 2.4 GHz.
- Log into the router and check whether 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz share one combined name.
- If the printer cannot find the combined network, temporarily split the bands by disabling Smart Connect or Band Steering.
- Connect the printer specifically to the 2.4 GHz name.
- After connection, you can leave bands split or recombine them if the printer stays connected.
Fix printers that connect then drop
Unstable printer Wi-Fi is often IP or power-saving related.
- Find the printer current IP address from its Network Settings or Wireless Status screen.
- Check the router DHCP or connected-device list for conflicts.
- Set a DHCP reservation for the printer using its MAC address.
- Check printer Power Settings or Energy Save and extend aggressive sleep timeouts if Wi-Fi drops during sleep.
- Monitor it over the next day.
More control
Use USB when you need to print immediately
Most printers still accept direct USB printing from one computer while you troubleshoot Wi-Fi separately.
Update printer firmware
Printer firmware updates often fix connectivity bugs. Use the printer control panel or manufacturer software such as HP Smart, Canon, or Epson tools.
Stay off guest Wi-Fi for printing
If the printer is on the main network but your phone is on guest Wi-Fi, isolation may prevent discovery. Put both on the same network.
