Faded printing usually comes from low ink or toner, draft/economy settings, clogged inkjet nozzles, wrong media settings, or weak non-original supplies. Work from the quickest checks to the deeper ones.

Use this when inkjet or laser pages are too pale, washed out, streaky, or getting lighter over time.
Check ink or toner levels
A single low color can make the whole page look wrong.
- Open the printer app or printer screen and check supply levels.
- Replace the low black or color cartridge if one is flagged.
- For laser printers, remove the toner cartridge and gently rock it side to side to redistribute toner.
- Reinstall it firmly and print a test page.
Turn off draft or economy mode
Many light pages are caused by an intentional ink-saving setting.
- Open the print dialog and choose Printer Properties, Preferences, or print options.
- Find Print Quality, Toner Save, Economy, Draft, Fast, Darkness, or Intensity.
- Change Draft/Fast/Economy to Normal, Best, or High Quality.
- Increase darkness one step if your driver offers it.
- Print again.
Run a nozzle check and cleaning cycle
Use this for inkjets when levels and settings look fine.
- Open Printer Maintenance, Clean Print Heads, or Clean Cartridges.
- Run a Nozzle Check or Print Quality Test first.
- If the pattern has gaps, run one cleaning cycle.
- Repeat the nozzle check.
- Avoid repeated cleaning beyond two or three cycles because it uses ink.
More control
Match media type
Plain paper, glossy photo paper, and matte paper need different ink behavior. Choose the paper actually loaded.
Old cartridges can weaken
Ink that sat for months can dry or separate. If cleaning does not restore it, replacement is faster.
Third-party supplies vary
If fading started after switching to refilled or off-brand ink or toner, test with an original cartridge before blaming the printer.
