Print quality problems point to different causes depending on what appears on the page. Streaks, faded output, wrong colors, smears, ghost images, and jagged text should not all be treated the same way.

Use this for inkjet or laser printers on Windows or Mac when printed pages look wrong but the printer still feeds paper.
Match your symptom to the cause
Start with the closest visual match.
- White streaks or missing lines: run a nozzle check. If it shows gaps, run a printhead cleaning cycle from the printer utility.
- Faded or streaky after nozzle cleaning: run printhead alignment from the maintenance menu.
- Wrong or washed-out colors: check every ink or toner level. One weak color changes the whole mix; run color calibration if available.
- Smudging or smearing: on inkjets, check paper type settings and allow drying time. On lasers, repeated smears can point to a dirty or failing fuser.
- Faint repeated ghost image: on laser printers, suspect a worn drum unit or image transfer problem.
- Blank or partially blank pages: check supplies, seating, cartridge tape, and drum or cartridge contact.
- Jagged or pixelated text: raise print quality from Draft/Fast to Normal or Best.
More control
Try fresh paper
Cheap, damp, or mismatched paper absorbs ink badly and can mimic a printer fault. Test with a fresh ream of normal paper.
Check economy modes
Some apps or drivers silently choose draft or ink-saving mode. Open Preferences or Properties before printing.
Repeated defects in the same place are physical
If the same mark appears in the same location on every page regardless of file, suspect a roller, fuser, drum, or printhead problem.
