PowerPoint animations control individual objects on a slide: how text appears, how an image draws attention, or how an item exits. They are different from transitions, which move from one whole slide to another.

Use this for PowerPoint for Microsoft 365, PowerPoint 2021, and PowerPoint 2019 on Windows or Mac when text, pictures, charts, or shapes need to appear one at a time or with timing control.
Add an animation to text or an object
Start with one selected item.
- Click the text box, picture, chart, shape, or object.
- Open the Animations tab.
- Choose an effect from the gallery. Green effects bring objects in, yellow effects emphasize visible objects, and red effects remove objects.
- Use Effect Options to change direction or style where available.
- Click Preview to watch the result.
PowerPoint adds a small numbered tag beside the object. That number is the object place in the animation order.
Control order and timing
Use the Animation Pane once a slide has more than one effect.
- Open Animations > Animation Pane.
- Drag effects up or down in the pane to change play order.
- Set Start to On Click, With Previous, or After Previous.
- Adjust Duration to control speed.
- Adjust Delay to stagger automatic effects.
For bullets that appear one line at a time without repeated clicking, set them to play After Previous with a short delay, or use On Click when the presenter should control each reveal.

Fix everything playing at once
Open the Animation Pane and check each Start setting. If everything is set to With Previous, the effects fire together. Change some to On Click or After Previous.
Stack effects with Add Animation
Clicking a new animation from the main gallery replaces the old one. To give one object multiple effects, such as an entrance followed by emphasis, use Animations > Add Animation.
Preview in Slide Show mode
Animations do not fully play in normal editing view. Use Preview or start the slide show with F5 to test timing.
Morph is separate
Morph lives on the Transitions tab and animates matching objects between two slides. It can look like an animation but uses a different setup.
Remove an animation
Open the Animation Pane, select the unwanted effect, and press Delete. You can also select the numbered tag beside the object and delete it.
