PlayStation Account Recovery: Fix a Forgotten Password or Hack

A PlayStation Network account can hold purchased games, wallet funds, subscriptions, friends, family settings, and saved payment methods. A simple forgotten password is usually quick; a compromise needs a fuller security review.

Does this affect you?

Use this for PSN accounts on PS4, PS5, the PlayStation App, or playstation.com when you forgot sign-in details or see purchases, friend activity, or profile changes you did not make.

If you forgot the sign-in ID or password

Use this when there is no sign of tampering and you simply cannot get in.

  1. On PS4 or PS5, choose Forgot your sign-in ID or password from the sign-in screen. In a browser, start sign-in at playstation.com and choose Trouble Signing In.
  2. If the password is forgotten, enter the sign-in ID, usually the account email, and use the reset email from PlayStation.
  3. Create a new password and sign in again on the console or PlayStation App.
  4. If the sign-in ID itself is forgotten, use PlayStation Support’s account lookup guidance and provide details tied to the account.
  5. If two-step verification is enabled, enter the SMS or authenticator code after the password reset.

If someone else has access

Use this for unrecognized purchases, changed Online ID, or a recovery email that no longer belongs to you.

  1. If you can still sign in, go to playstation.com, open Account Settings > Security, and change the password immediately.
  2. Review Devices or console activation settings and deactivate anything unfamiliar.
  3. Check PlayStation Store Transaction History for purchases you did not make.
  4. If you cannot sign in, contact PlayStation Support and use the compromised-account path.
  5. Be ready to verify ownership with billing history, previous games, account details, or console activation information.
  6. Wait for Sony’s manual review. Support should never ask for your password itself.

More control

Turn on 2-Step Verification

At playstation.com > Account Settings > Security > 2-Step Verification, enable a phone or authenticator app. This is the best protection after recovery.

Review wallet exposure

Under Account Management > Wallet, remove saved cards you rarely use and check payment history for charges that need dispute or refund review.

Check family settings

If you manage child accounts, open Family Management and confirm spending limits and purchase restrictions are still correct.

Avoid free-credit traps

Sites or messages promising free PlayStation Store credit, games, or PS Plus in exchange for your login are phishing. Redeem credit only through official PlayStation channels.
