PFN_LIST_CORRUPT: How to Fix This Blue Screen

PFN_LIST_CORRUPT means Windows’ internal Page Frame Number list, which tracks physical memory pages, became corrupted. Windows stops immediately because continuing could corrupt more data.

This guide applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs showing the PFN_LIST_CORRUPT stop code.

Does This Affect You?

This blue screen often appears during heavy memory use or after sleep. Faulty RAM is a leading cause, but graphics/storage drivers and damaged system files can produce the same stop code.

Run Windows Memory Diagnostic

1. Search for Windows Memory Diagnostic and open it.
2. Choose Restart now and check for problems. Save work first because the PC restarts immediately.
3. Let the startup memory test complete.
4. When Windows loads again, check the result notification or find MemoryDiagnostics-Results in Event Viewer under Windows Logs > System.

If memory errors are reported, treat RAM as the main suspect. If the test is clean, continue with drivers and system-file repair.

Update or Roll Back Drivers

1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
2. Check Display adapters and Storage controllers first because they commonly trigger this error.
3. Open the device Properties > Driver tab.
4. Use Roll Back Driver if a recent driver update lines up with the crashes.
5. Otherwise choose Update driver, or install the newest driver from the hardware maker.
6. Restart and watch for another crash.

Also review Windows Update history for driver updates installed shortly before the problem began.

Repair Windows System Files

1. Open Command Prompt as administrator.
2. Run sfc /scannow and wait for completion.
3. Run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. Keep the PC online.
4. Restart after both scans complete.

If RAM Errors Appear

Test One Module at a Time

On desktops with multiple RAM sticks, test with one stick installed at a time if you are comfortable opening the case. This can identify the failing module.

Reseat the Memory

A memory stick that is not fully seated can report errors. Power off, unplug the PC, and press each module straight into its slot until the side clips lock.

Check the Warranty

Many desktop RAM kits have long or lifetime warranties. If a module tests bad, check the manufacturer’s support page before buying replacement memory.

Be Careful with Modern Laptops

Many laptops have soldered or difficult-to-access RAM. If diagnostics point to memory and the laptop is sealed, use manufacturer support or an authorized repair center.
