PayPal has two password paths: reset when you cannot sign in, and change when you are already logged in. Use the one that matches your situation.
Does this affect you?
Use this for personal and business PayPal accounts in the PayPal app or at paypal.com.
Forgot your password
Use this when you cannot log in.
- Open PayPal or paypal.com.
- Choose Forgot password on the login screen.
- Enter the email address or mobile number linked to the account.
- Check for a verification code or reset link by email or text.
- Enter the code or open the link.
- Create a new password that meets PayPal’s requirements and has not been used recently.
- Confirm the change and sign in.
Change your password while logged in
Use this if you still have account access.
- Log into paypal.com or the PayPal app.
- Open Settings, usually shown with a gear icon.
- Go to Security.
- Choose Update next to Password.
- Enter the current password, then the new password twice.
- Save the change. PayPal may sign out other devices.
More control
Enable 2-Step Verification
Open Settings > Security > 2-Step Verification and add an authenticator app or phone method so a stolen password alone cannot open the account.
Avoid fake reset emails
Real PayPal password links should lead to paypal.com. If you receive a reset email you did not request, go directly to paypal.com yourself and review activity.
Review activity and Wallet
After a suspicious password issue, check Login activity and remove unfamiliar bank accounts or cards under Wallet. Use a password manager to avoid weak or reused passwords.
