A gas oven that is completely off should not smell like gas. Even a faint odor can mean gas is escaping somewhere it should not, so treat it as a safety issue first and a troubleshooting issue second.
This applies to gas ranges and gas ovens in US homes. Electric ovens cannot create a gas smell; if an electric appliance is nearby, the odor is coming from another source.

Natural gas is odorized so people can smell leaks. If the oven is off, the burner valves should be closed and gas should not be flowing. A returning or unexplained odor needs attention from the gas utility or a licensed gas technician.
If the smell is strong, you hear hissing, or anyone feels dizzy or light-headed, leave the house immediately. Do not turn lights or fans on or off, do not use a lighter, and do not use your phone until you are outside and away from the building. Call the gas utility emergency line or 911 from a safe location.
Faint smell only: safe checks before calling
Only do these checks if the smell is faint, there is no hissing, and everyone feels normal. Open a nearby window first.
- Make sure every surface burner knob and the oven control are fully Off.
- Check whether an older range has a standing pilot light that has gone out.
- Look for spills or objects blocking burner ports, without moving gas connections.
- Smell near the back connection area only to note where the odor seems strongest; do not touch or tighten anything.
Never tighten, loosen, repair, or adjust a gas line, valve, or fitting yourself. Even small gas work should be done by the gas utility or a licensed technician.
If an older pilot light is out, the gas utility or technician can relight it and confirm that the flame is stable, blue, and the correct size. Do not keep relighting a pilot that repeatedly goes out.
A plug-in natural gas detector near the range can provide another warning signal, especially because odor perception varies and kitchen smells can mask the gas odorant.
Any odor that returns after knobs are confirmed off and the room is ventilated should be checked professionally. In many US areas, utilities respond to suspected gas leaks at no charge because the risk is serious.
