Optimized Battery Charging is a battery-health feature that can pause charging around 80 percent, then finish closer to the time you normally unplug. It is meant to reduce how long the battery sits fully charged, which can slow long-term wear.
The feature is available on iPhone 6s and later running iOS 13 or newer, and it is enabled by default on supported devices.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if your iPhone seems to stop charging overnight, waits at about 80 percent, or shows a message saying Optimized Battery Charging is active. That behavior is usually intentional.
What It Does
- The iPhone learns your usual charging routine, such as charging overnight and unplugging around the same time each morning.
- It charges normally to around 80 percent.
- It waits there when it predicts you do not need the final charge yet.
- It resumes charging so the phone reaches 100 percent closer to your usual unplug time.
If you wake up earlier than usual, you may see less than 100 percent even though the charger worked. The phone was trying to protect battery health based on your normal pattern.
Check or Turn It Off
- Open Settings.
- Tap Battery.
- Tap Battery Health & Charging.
- Find Optimized Battery Charging.
- Turn it off if you want the iPhone to charge straight to 100 percent whenever possible.
When the feature is actively holding a charge, the Lock Screen or Control Center may offer a one-time option to charge fully now. Use that when you have an unusual early departure instead of disabling the feature permanently.
When Disabling Makes Sense
Irregular Charging
If you have no regular charging schedule, the iPhone has less routine to learn and may hold the charge at inconvenient times. Turning it off makes charging more predictable.
Travel or Early Starts
For early flights, road trips, or unusual days, use the charge-now override if it appears. That keeps the long-term feature enabled for normal days.
It Does Not Restore Capacity
Optimized Battery Charging slows future wear. It does not repair a battery that already has low Maximum Capacity or unexpected shutdowns. Check Battery Health for that.
