Netflix Keeps Crashing or Freezing on Your TV? How to Fix It

TV and streaming troubleshooting category image

A Netflix crash or freeze is different from buffering. Buffering shows a loading spinner. A crash freezes on a frame, closes the app, or sends you back to the TV home screen.

Crashes usually come from app memory problems, an outdated app, corrupted installation files, limited storage, or a device struggling with high-quality playback.

Does this affect you?

Use this if Netflix starts but freezes, sound continues while the picture stops, the app closes itself, or the TV returns to the home screen.

Force-close Netflix and restart the device

  1. Fully close Netflix. On many TVs, use the app switcher or options menu. On Roku, pressing Home exits the app.
  2. Unplug the TV or streaming device from power.
  3. Wait a full 60 seconds.
  4. Plug it back in and let it boot completely.
  5. Open Netflix and replay the same title.

If the title now plays normally, the crash was likely a temporary memory issue.

Update Netflix

  1. Open the device app store: Samsung Apps, LG Content Store, Roku Channel Store, Amazon Appstore, Apple App Store, or the relevant store.
  2. Search for Netflix.
  3. Install any available update.
  4. Turn on automatic app updates if your device offers the option.
  5. Restart the TV and test again.

Streaming apps change often. An app that has not updated in months can crash after Netflix changes its service-side code.

Reinstall Netflix completely

  1. Highlight Netflix on the home screen or app list.
  2. Open the options menu.
  3. Choose Uninstall, Remove, or Delete.
  4. Restart the TV or streaming device.
  5. Reinstall Netflix from the app store.
  6. Sign in again, using netflix.com/tvsignin if a TV code appears.

A reinstall replaces corrupted local files and clears problems caused by partial updates.

Check patterns after reinstalling

If Netflix crashes only on one or two titles, the file on Netflix’s side may be the issue. Try another device or check again later.

Older streaming sticks and budget TVs can struggle with 4K or HDR decoding. If crashes happen mostly with high-quality titles, set Data Usage per Screen to Medium from Netflix account playback settings. Also check device storage and remove unused apps or channels if storage is nearly full.
