Some uneven microwave heating is normal. Microwaves bounce around the cavity in patterns, which is why the turntable moves food through stronger and weaker areas. It becomes a problem when hot and cold spots are extreme or suddenly worse than before.
These steps apply to countertop and over-the-range microwaves from GE, Samsung, Panasonic, LG, Whirlpool, and similar brands with rotating turntables.

If the timer counts down, the tray spins, and food heats but comes out uneven, the issue is often food arrangement rather than a failed microwave. Dense centers, dry foods, and oversized portions heat unevenly even in a healthy unit.
Check food shape, placement, and stirring
- Spread food into a shallow, even layer or ring instead of a tall mound. Thick centers heat more slowly.
- Stir or rotate food halfway through cooking, especially soups, sauces, leftovers, and mixed textures.
- Cover food with a microwave-safe lid or vented wrap so steam helps carry heat across the surface.
- Cut large or irregular pieces into similar sizes before reheating.
Never run a microwave empty, even for a quick test. Keep a cup of water or food inside so the energy has something to absorb. Never open the outer housing or rear panel; microwave capacitors can hold a dangerous charge after unplugging.
Clean the waveguide cover and check power level
A dirty waveguide cover can absorb energy and make one area heat poorly.
- Unplug the microwave.
- Find the waveguide cover, a small mica, ceramic, or cardboard-backed panel on an interior wall or ceiling.
- Inspect it for grease, burn marks, bubbling, cracks, or holes.
- Wipe it gently with a damp cloth. Replace it if it is charred or damaged.
- For dense foods, try 70 to 80 percent power for a longer time instead of full power. Lower power gives heat more time to spread.
Aging magnetrons can weaken gradually, often showing up as longer cook times and worse unevenness before heat fails completely. Large-capacity microwaves can also show more noticeable hot and cold zones simply because the wave pattern covers more space.
If the turntable spins, food placement is corrected, the waveguide cover is clean, and heating is still dramatically uneven or much slower than before, have a technician test the microwave output or compare repair cost with replacement.
