Bluetooth issues usually show up as a MacBook that will not turn Bluetooth on, cannot discover devices, or repeatedly drops a mouse, keyboard, trackpad, speaker, or headphones. Most cases are software or interference before they are hardware.
This guide applies to Apple Silicon and Intel MacBooks on recent macOS versions.
Does This Affect You?
Use these steps if Bluetooth is unavailable, grayed out, missing, or unstable with one or several devices.
Toggle Bluetooth and Restart
- Open Control Center and select Bluetooth.
- Turn Bluetooth off and wait about 10 seconds.
- Turn it back on.
- Make sure the accessory is powered on, charged, nearby, and in pairing mode if needed.
- Restart the Mac from the Apple menu.
- Open System Settings > Bluetooth and test again.
Forget and Re-Pair One Device
- Open System Settings > Bluetooth.
- Click the info button beside the problem device.
- Choose Forget This Device.
- Put the accessory back into pairing mode.
- Select it when it appears and click Connect.
- Use it for a few minutes to confirm the connection holds.
Reset Bluetooth More Deeply
If several accessories fail, remove old pairings and rebuild them from scratch.
- Show Bluetooth in the menu bar if needed from Control Center settings.
- If your macOS version still offers the hidden Bluetooth debug menu, use it to remove all devices or reset the Bluetooth module.
- Restart the Mac.
- Pair each accessory again from Bluetooth settings.
Other Bluetooth Causes
2.4 GHz Interference
Bluetooth shares crowded 2.4 GHz space with Wi-Fi, USB 3 hubs, drives, and other wireless devices. Move hubs and external drives away from the Mac if dropouts began after adding them.
Intel NVRAM Reset
On Intel MacBooks, resetting NVRAM can clear low-level settings that affect wireless behavior. Apple Silicon Macs handle this automatically.
USB-C Docks
Some docks and hubs interfere with Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Disconnect them temporarily to test.
Hardware Warning
If Bluetooth will not turn on at all and macOS shows no Bluetooth hardware after restarts and resets, book Apple diagnostics.
