The spinning rainbow wait cursor appears when an app is too busy to respond. A brief spin is normal; a recurring or long-lasting spin points to an app, memory pressure, low storage, slow drives, or a deeper system issue.
This guide applies to recent macOS versions on MacBook, iMac, Mac mini, and Mac Studio.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if the spinning cursor appears constantly, locks an app for many seconds, or keeps interrupting normal work.
Clear the Current Spin
- Wait 15 to 20 seconds first in case the app is completing a real task such as saving or loading.
- Open Activity Monitor from Spotlight.
- Select the CPU tab and sort by % CPU.
- Look for the frozen app, possibly marked Not Responding.
- Select it, click the stop button, and choose Force Quit only after you accept losing unsaved work in that app.
- Reopen the app and see whether it behaves normally.
Reduce How Often It Happens
- Open Activity Monitor and check the Memory tab.
- Watch Memory Pressure. Yellow or red means the Mac is struggling for RAM.
- Close unused browser tabs and apps.
- Open Storage settings and keep at least 15 to 20 GB free when possible.
- Remove unnecessary background items from Login Items & Extensions.
- Restart the Mac to clear memory leaks and stuck processes.
Other Causes to Check
One Problem App
If only one app triggers the spin, update it. You can also quit it and clear its cache folder under ~/Library/Caches if you recognize the app’s folder.
Slow Network or External Drives
If the spin happens while opening files from iCloud Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, a network share, or an external disk, the storage connection may be the bottleneck.
Heavy Graphics Work
Video editing, 3D, and design apps can cause waits when the GPU is under load, especially with high-resolution external displays.
Run Apple Diagnostics
If freezes happen across unrelated apps despite free storage and low memory pressure, run Apple Diagnostics to check for hardware problems.
