Mac Taking Forever to Start Up: How to Speed Up Boot Time

Mac slow startup troubleshooting illustration

A Mac that takes much longer than usual to reach a usable desktop often has too many login items, background extensions, low storage, or pending updates. These are usually settings and maintenance issues rather than hardware repair problems.

This guide applies to recent macOS versions on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.

Does This Affect You?

Use this if startup used to be quick but now takes minutes to pass login or finish loading the desktop.

Trim Login Items

  1. Open System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions.
  2. Review Open at Login.
  3. Select apps you do not need immediately after signing in.
  4. Click the minus button to remove them from automatic startup.
  5. Keep only daily essentials such as a required sync or messaging app.

Removing an app from Open at Login does not uninstall it. You can still launch it manually.

Check Background Extensions and Helpers

  1. Stay in Login Items & Extensions.
  2. Scroll below Open at Login.
  3. Review extensions and background items by category.
  4. Turn off items for apps you recognize and do not need running all the time.
  5. Restart the Mac to test startup time.

If you do not recognize an item, leave it enabled until you know what it does.

Check Storage and Updates

  1. Open Storage settings and make sure the drive is not close to full.
  2. Free space if needed, ideally keeping at least 10 to 15 percent of the drive available.
  3. Open System Settings > General > Software Update.
  4. Install pending macOS updates, then restart again.

Slow Startup Notes

Normal Startup Range

Modern Macs with SSDs often reach the login screen quickly and become usable within about a minute. Several minutes is worth investigating.

FileVault

FileVault can add a short delay while the encrypted disk unlocks after you enter the password. That is normal and part of the security trade-off.

Sudden Slowdown

If startup became slow right after installing one app, check that app first in Login Items & Extensions.

Possible Drive Issue

If startup remains unusually slow after trimming login items, freeing space, and updating macOS, a failing drive or storage controller may need diagnostics.
