An empty Mac desktop usually means icons are hidden, moved by iCloud settings, or shown on another display. It rarely means the files were deleted.
This guide applies to recent macOS versions on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.
Does This Affect You?
Use these steps when files and folders that used to sit on the desktop are suddenly missing and only the wallpaper remains.
Check Stage Manager
- Click Control Center in the menu bar.
- Check whether Stage Manager is on.
- Turn Stage Manager off, or open its options and show desktop items while keeping Stage Manager enabled.
- Look for the desktop icons to return immediately.
Stage Manager can hide desktop items intentionally. It does not delete or move the files.
Check Finder Desktop Settings
- Click the desktop background so Finder is active.
- Open Finder > Settings.
- Check the General tab for items shown on the desktop.
- Also use View > Show View Options while the desktop is active.
- Make sure icon size and grid spacing are not making items hard to see.
Check iCloud Desktop and Documents
- Open System Settings and click your Apple Account name.
- Open iCloud > iCloud Drive.
- Check whether Desktop & Documents Folders is enabled.
- If it is on, open Finder > iCloud Drive > Desktop to look for the files.
- If it was recently turned off, check Documents for a folder containing the previous desktop files.

Wait for Sync
Spinning cloud icons mean files are still uploading or downloading. Give iCloud time if a large sync is underway.
Keep the Desktop Light
Hundreds of desktop icons can slow Finder thumbnail work. Move files into Documents and keep aliases on the desktop if you want quick access.
Multiple Displays
Check other connected displays and Desktop & Dock settings if icons appear to have moved to another screen.
Find One File with Spotlight
Press Command + Space and search the file name. Spotlight can locate it even if iCloud or Finder moved where it appears.
