A refrigerator with a warm interior and a silent, clicking, or very hot compressor needs careful triage. Some causes are simple power or airflow problems, while the compressor and sealed refrigerant system are professional-only repairs.
These steps apply to LG, Frigidaire, KitchenAid, Kenmore, and similar refrigerators with a compressor at the rear or bottom rear of the cabinet.

A compressor problem can sound like silence, repeated clicking every few minutes, or a hot compressor that will not keep running. Each points to a different possibility, including outlet power, overload protection, dirty coils, a start relay, or a failed compressor.
Quick checks anyone can do
- Confirm the outlet has power by testing it with a lamp or charger. Check nearby GFCI outlets if the refrigerator is on that circuit.
- Unplug the refrigerator for five minutes, then reconnect it. This can reset the compressor overload protector.
- Make sure the refrigerator is not trapped in a hot garage or tight alcove with poor airflow.
- Vacuum dust and pet hair from condenser coils under or behind the refrigerator.
Unplug the refrigerator before reaching behind or underneath it. Let a hot compressor cool for at least 30 minutes before touching nearby areas. Never open, tap, solder, or repair the compressor or refrigerant lines yourself; sealed-system service requires certified equipment and training.
Listen for start relay clicking
A repeated click with no compressor hum often points to the start relay rather than the compressor itself.
- Listen near the lower rear of the refrigerator.
- Note whether a click repeats every few minutes and the compressor never starts.
- Check the model parts diagram to see whether the start relay is a separate clip-on component.
- If you are not sure, have a technician test the relay before assuming the compressor is bad.
If power, airflow, and relay checks do not explain the problem, the compressor may have failed electrically or mechanically. That diagnosis requires a meter and experience. If the compressor runs but the refrigerator never cools, a refrigerant leak or sealed-system issue is possible.
Compressor replacement is one of the most expensive refrigerator repairs. On an older unit, ask for a repair-versus-replace opinion before approving the work.
