
Your laptop stops charging at exactly 80 percent every time, even while plugged in. On many modern laptops, that is usually a battery care feature rather than a bad battery. Some models cap at 60, 80, 85, or 90 percent.
Does This Affect You?
Manufacturers limit maximum charge to slow lithium-ion battery wear when a laptop spends most of its life plugged in. It can look like a fault if the setting was enabled by default or hidden in a preinstalled app.
Find and Adjust the Charge Limit Setting
The location depends on the laptop brand.
- Dell: open Dell Power Manager or Dell Optimizer, go to Battery, and look for Battery Charge Configuration or Custom mode. Switch to Standard or Adaptive for full charging.
- Lenovo: open Lenovo Vantage, go to Device or Power, and find Battery settings. Conservation Mode commonly caps around 55 to 60 percent.
- ASUS: open MyASUS, go to Customization > Battery Health Charging, and choose Full Capacity Mode for 100 percent, Balanced for around 80 percent, or Maximum Lifespan for around 60 percent.
- HP: check HP Battery Health Manager in BIOS/UEFI on many business models, often under Advanced > Power Management after pressing F10 at startup. Some consumer models expose it in HP Support Assistant.
- Samsung: open Samsung Settings and check Battery for Battery Life Extension or a similar toggle that caps around 85 percent.
- If the manufacturer app does not show the feature, check BIOS/UEFI because some brands put the same control there.
Keeping a lithium-ion battery at 100 percent for long periods, especially while warm, speeds wear. If the laptop mostly stays on a desk, an 80 percent cap is a reasonable trade for longer battery life. If you need maximum runtime for travel, switch to full-charge mode before you leave.
If the battery stops at a different random percentage, drains quickly, or reports poor health, check the real battery condition instead. On Windows, run powercfg /batteryreport and compare Design Capacity with Full Charge Capacity.
