Internet Slow? How to Actually Speed It Up

Slow internet troubleshooting on router and laptop

Slow internet can mean slow pages, buffering streams, frozen calls, or downloads that crawl. Before changing hardware or plans, measure whether the slowdown is from the provider connection, Wi-Fi, or devices using bandwidth.

Does this affect you?

Use this when internet connects but feels slow on Wi-Fi or wired devices across any provider or plan.

Run a speed test and compare it to your plan

Start with a baseline that removes guesswork.

  1. Connect a computer to the router with Ethernet if possible.
  2. Run a speed test and record download, upload, and ping.
  3. Compare the result with the speed on your provider app or bill.
  4. Run the same test over Wi-Fi while standing near the router.
  5. If wired speed is good but Wi-Fi is poor, focus on wireless. If wired speed is far below the plan, contact the provider.

Cut down Wi-Fi congestion

Use this when wired speed looks fine but wireless is slow.

  1. Move closer to the router for a test.
  2. Use 5 GHz for speed-sensitive devices near the router if your router shows separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz names.
  3. Move the router to a central, open location away from closets, TVs, and corners.
  4. Try a less crowded Wi-Fi channel in apartments or dense neighborhoods.

Find what is using the bandwidth

Sometimes the connection is fine but busy.

  1. Check for game updates, computer downloads, cloud backups, and smart TV streaming.
  2. Open the router connected-device list and look for unexpected activity or unknown devices.
  3. Schedule large downloads and updates for quiet hours.
  4. Consider a faster plan if several people regularly stream, game, and video call at the same time.

More control

QoS can help a busy network

Quality of Service prioritizes calls, gaming, or a work laptop over less urgent downloads. Look for QoS under Advanced settings in the router.

Mesh backhaul can limit speed

A mesh node far from the main router may be slower because each wireless hop consumes capacity. Wired backhaul or better node placement can help.

Ask about evening throttling or congestion

If slowdowns happen mostly at night, ask the provider about local congestion or traffic management, especially on shared cable networks.
