
Ice maker leaks usually show up in one of two places: water or ice buildup around the ice maker inside the freezer, or water on the kitchen floor near the refrigerator. Those two symptoms often have different causes, so start by locating the leak path.
These steps apply to most built-in refrigerator ice makers from Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, LG, Frigidaire, Maytag, KitchenAid, and related brands.

Water inside the freezer points toward the fill tube, mold, level, or freezer drain. Water on the floor more often comes from the supply line, filter housing, inlet valve, drain pan, or defrost drain. Timing also helps: a leak right after an ice cycle suggests the fill system, while a constant drip suggests a supply or valve issue.
Narrow down where the water is coming from
- Open the freezer and look under the ice maker for standing water, a frozen sheet, or ice buildup on the compartment floor.
- Check the floor near the front corners and under the refrigerator for slow puddles.
- Notice whether the leak appears when the ice maker fills or dumps ice, or whether it continues all the time.
- If a filter was recently replaced or plumbing was recently worked on, inspect that connection first.
Before disconnecting any water line or filter, turn off the water supply valve behind the refrigerator or under the sink. Unplug the refrigerator before reaching behind it or removing any access panel. Clean standing water right away because wet floors near electrical appliances are dangerous.
Fix a leak inside the freezer
Internal freezer leaks usually come from water missing the mold, overflowing the mold, or backing up as frost.
- Inspect the fill tube, the small tube that feeds water into the ice mold. Ice around the outlet or dripping outside the mold suggests a partial freeze, misalignment, or splashback.
- Check whether the ice maker and refrigerator are level. A tilted ice maker can overflow on one side and freeze water where it should not be.
- Look at any gasket or seal around the ice maker housing where it meets the freezer wall. Cracked or shrunken seals can let condensation and overflow escape.
- If frost is packed around the assembly, do a full defrost by unplugging the refrigerator and leaving the freezer door open for several hours, then watch the next few ice cycles.
Fix a leak onto the floor
Floor leaks need attention quickly because they can damage flooring and cabinets.
- Pull the refrigerator out carefully, unplugged, and inspect the water line at the wall valve and rear refrigerator connection. A loose compression fitting can drip slowly for hours.
- Check the filter housing and make sure the filter is the correct model and fully seated. A filter that is not locked in can leak at the housing.
- If water seems to come from underneath, inspect the defrost drain path. A clogged drain can send meltwater out the front instead of to the pan.
- Look at the drain pan behind the lower grille or under the refrigerator. It should not be cracked or overflowing from an abnormal leak.
If the basic connections are dry but the leak continues, the water inlet valve may be seeping even when the ice maker is not filling. Internal refrigerator tubing can also crack with age or after freezing conditions.
Shut off the water supply and call an appliance technician if you cannot find the leak, if water is more than a slow drip, or if the suspected source is behind panels or inside the cabinet. Preventing floor damage matters more than keeping the ice maker running.
