Philips Hue Lights Flickering: How to Fix It

Philips Hue flickering is often caused by power interruptions or incompatible dimmers, not the Hue bulb itself. Hue bulbs need constant power so the Bridge can keep communicating with them.

These steps apply to Philips Hue white and color bulbs connected through a Hue Bridge and managed in the Hue app.

Does this affect you?

Use this if Hue lights flicker, blink randomly, dim on their own, or brighten without a manual app change.

Rule out a wall switch cutting power

  1. Find the wall switch controlling the Hue fixture.
  2. Leave the switch on at all times.
  3. Ask household members not to toggle it out of habit.
  4. For lamps, check the lamp’s own physical switch.
  5. Check the outlet if the lamp is plugged into switched power.
  6. Use a Hue Dimmer Switch, Hue Smart Button, or compatible smart control if you want physical control.

A standard switch cuts power. Hue-compatible controls send commands while keeping the bulb powered.

Check for non-Hue dimmer switches

Standard mechanical or electronic dimmers do not work properly with Hue bulbs.

  • Old dimmers can cause flickering, buzzing, or bulbs that never fully turn off.
  • Leaving a dimmer at full brightness may still cause problems.
  • Replace incompatible dimmers with standard switches or Hue-compatible controls.
  • Use the Hue app for dimming instead of the wall dimmer.

Reduce Zigbee interference and update firmware

  1. Move the Hue Bridge a few feet away from the Wi-Fi router and other electronics.
  2. Keep the Bridge in the open rather than inside a cabinet.
  3. Open the Hue app.
  4. Go to Settings > Software Update.
  5. Install Bridge updates.
  6. Check affected bulbs for updates.
  7. Add another Hue bulb or accessory between the Bridge and far bulbs if range is weak.

Hue uses Zigbee, and plugged-in Hue bulbs can help extend the mesh. Baby monitors, routers, and other 2.4 GHz devices too close to the Bridge can interfere.

If the fixture has an old ballast or transformer, any LED bulb may flicker there. Also review Hue automations such as wake-up or go-to-sleep routines, which can look like random dimming. If one bulb flickers in every fixture while others work, contact Philips Hue support for warranty options.
