Hue Bridge Not Connecting: How to Fix It

The Philips Hue Bridge is a wired network device, not a Wi-Fi device. When it will not connect, start with Ethernet, router ports, and local discovery instead of Wi-Fi passwords.

These steps apply to the square Philips Hue Bridge 2nd generation connected to a home router by Ethernet.

Does this affect you?

Use this if the Hue app cannot find the Bridge, the light ring is wrong, or Hue lights stopped responding because the Bridge is offline.

Check Ethernet and router connection

  1. Confirm the Ethernet cable is firmly plugged into the Hue Bridge.
  2. Confirm the other end is in a LAN port on the router, not the WAN or Internet port.
  3. Try a different Ethernet cable.
  4. Try a different LAN port.
  5. Check the Bridge power adapter and outlet.
  6. Look at the Bridge light ring.
  7. Solid blue usually means the Bridge is online.
  8. No light points to power trouble.
  9. A slow pulse can mean local connection without internet access.

If your router has many connected devices, check its device list to see whether the Hue Bridge appears. Some consumer routers can hit practical device limits.

Restart and re-add the Bridge

  1. Unplug the Hue Bridge power adapter.
  2. Wait 10 seconds.
  3. Plug it back in.
  4. Wait a full 2 minutes.
  5. Restart the router by unplugging it for 30 seconds.
  6. Wait for the network to return.
  7. Open the Hue app.
  8. Go to Settings > My Hue System.
  9. Choose Add Bridge and let the app search.

Make sure your phone is on the same network as the Bridge. A phone on guest Wi-Fi may not discover a Bridge connected to the main router network.

Check isolation and advanced network settings

Router settings called AP Isolation, Client Isolation, guest isolation, or wireless isolation can block local device discovery. Turn those off for the network your phone uses when adding Hue.

If your home network uses VLANs, keep the phone and Hue Bridge on the same VLAN or configure discovery routing deliberately. The Hue app depends on local network discovery and normally does not cross network boundaries.

If the Bridge lost power during a firmware update and still will not recover, check Philips Hue support for the Bridge recovery tool. It can reflash firmware from a computer in some cases.
