HP Smart can fail even when the printer itself is fine. The app depends on printer discovery, HP account state, permissions, local network access, and the printer being online in the app.
Does this affect you?
Use this if tapping Print in HP Smart does nothing, jobs stay pending, the printer shows offline in the app, or HP Smart cannot send a file that prints elsewhere.
Check printer status in HP Smart
Start inside the app so you know whether HP Smart can actually see the printer.
- Open HP Smart and select the printer tile.
- If it shows Offline, check the printer Wi-Fi light and reconnect the printer to the network.
- Confirm the device running HP Smart is on the same Wi-Fi for local printing.
- Sign in to the HP account if the app asks.
- Try printing a simple test page or photo rather than a large document.
Check app permissions and queues
Phones and computers can block the app from seeing local devices or files.
- On iPhone or iPad, allow Local Network and Photos/Files access for HP Smart.
- On Android, allow nearby devices, storage/photos, and local network permissions if prompted.
- On Windows or Mac, allow HP Smart through firewall or privacy prompts.
- Cancel stuck jobs in HP Smart and in the system print queue.
- Restart the app, printer, and device.
Reinstall or refresh HP Smart
Use this when the app itself seems corrupted or stuck.
- Update HP Smart from the app store or Microsoft Store.
- Remove and re-add the printer in HP Smart.
- If needed, uninstall HP Smart and install a fresh copy.
- Add the printer again while on the same network.
- Try printing a small document after setup finishes.
More control
Try another print path
AirPrint, Mopria, the system print dialog, or USB printing can reveal whether HP Smart is the only failing piece.
Large files can sit pending
Photos, PDFs with many images, and cloud files may take time to download or render. Test with a simple page before troubleshooting deeper.
Remote printing needs Print Anywhere
If you are away from home, local printing will not work unless Print Anywhere is enabled and the printer is online through the same HP account.
