Windows 11 can often install a basic HP printer driver by itself, but that basic driver may only print. If you need scanning, ink levels, alignment, maintenance tools, or a failed install needs repair, use HP own software instead.

Let Windows 11 install the driver automatically
Try this first for many USB and network HP printers.
- Connect the printer by USB or make sure it is on the same Wi-Fi as the PC.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Click Add device.
- When the HP printer appears, click Add device and let Windows download a driver.
- Print a test page from the printer settings.
If the printer never appears after a minute or two, use HP full installer.
Install HP Smart or the full HP driver
This adds the tools that the basic Windows driver often leaves out.
- Go to support.hp.com and search the exact printer model.
- Open Software and Drivers and confirm Windows 11 is selected.
- Download HP Smart or the Full Feature Software and Drivers package.
- Run the installer and choose Wireless or USB to match your setup.
- Finish setup and print a test page from Windows Printers & scanners.
Fix a driver that will not install
Use these steps when setup errors, stalls, or the printer disappears.
- Remove the broken printer entry from Printers & scanners.
- Open Device Manager and remove leftover HP entries with warning icons under Printers or Print queues.
- Restart the PC.
- Run HP Print and Scan Doctor from HP Support.
- If needed, install once over USB even for a wireless printer, then switch to Wi-Fi later in HP Smart.

Basic versus full driver
The Windows class driver may print only. HP software adds scan support, ink monitoring, alignment, and troubleshooting utilities.
Keep HP software updated
Check HP Smart or HP Support for updates because Windows Update does not always offer the newest HP package.
Remove duplicate entries
If reinstalling leaves two copies of the same printer, print a test page from each and remove the one that does not work.
