- Paste your resume and one specific job listing into the AI tool.
- Ask it to identify gaps between your real experience and the listing’s requirements.
- Ask it to tailor your bullet points toward the job’s wording without adding skills you do not have.
- For a cover letter, provide the resume, listing, and two or three genuine reasons you want that role. Ask for a first draft only.
- Rewrite the opening and closing in your own voice.
- Ask the AI to proofread for typos, awkward phrasing, and inconsistent formatting before submitting.
Interview prep and company research
AI is useful for practice, but verify current facts.
- Ask for likely interview questions based on the job description.
- Practice behavioral answers using the STAR method: Situation, Task, Action, Result.
- Describe a real work example and ask AI to help structure it more clearly.
- Ask for a company research summary, then verify key claims with the company website and recent news.
- Role-play salary negotiation or difficult interview questions.
- Paste a draft answer and ask what is unclear or weak.

Do not let AI inflate your resume
Adding skills, numbers, certifications, or achievements you do not actually have can backfire in interviews and early job performance. Use AI to phrase facts, not invent them.
Specific beats generic
Recruiters increasingly recognize generic AI phrasing. Add details about the company, role, team, product, or your real motivation so the application sounds like you.
Answer AI-use questions honestly
Some applications now ask whether AI helped prepare materials. Using AI as a drafting tool is common. Misrepresenting your involvement is the risk.
Protect private information
Avoid pasting full home addresses, ID numbers, salary history, or sensitive employer details into chat tools unless you understand the privacy settings. Keep prompts close to what belongs on a public resume.
