A VPN can protect your connection from local network snooping, but it also moves a lot of trust to the VPN provider. Safe VPN use starts with choosing the right company, then turning on the settings that prevent leaks.

Choose a trustworthy VPN provider
The company running the VPN matters more than most buttons inside the app.
- Avoid unknown free VPN apps. VPN servers cost money, and a free service with no clear business model may pay for itself by logging or selling browsing data.
- Look for an independently audited no-logs policy. A privacy promise is stronger when a third-party security firm has tested and published findings.
- Check company ownership and location. Laws, parent companies, and past incidents can affect how much you should trust the provider.
- Prefer modern protocols such as WireGuard or OpenVPN. Most reputable apps choose these automatically.
- Read recent reviews from security-focused sources, not just app store ratings. Look for leaks, logging controversies, or unclear ownership.
- Be cautious when a VPN is bundled into an unrelated free app, such as a flashlight, cleaner, or battery saver, especially if it asks for broad permissions.
Set it up and use it correctly
A good VPN still needs leak-prevention settings and sensible habits.
- Install only the official app from the provider’s website, the App Store, Google Play, or the Microsoft Store.
- Turn on the kill switch if available. This blocks internet traffic if the VPN disconnects unexpectedly.
- Enable DNS leak protection if it is offered as a separate setting. DNS requests can otherwise reveal which sites you are looking up.
- Choose a nearby server unless you specifically need another region. Very distant servers can slow browsing and video calls.
- Turn the VPN on before banking, shopping, or signing in on unfamiliar Wi-Fi. Leaving it on by default is easier than remembering only during risky moments.
More control
A VPN is not anti-phishing
It encrypts traffic between you and the VPN server, but it cannot stop you from entering a password on a fake website, approving a scam payment, or installing malware.
Websites can still recognize you
Cookies, browser fingerprinting, and account logins still work while a VPN is active. A VPN hides your IP address from some parties; it does not make you anonymous everywhere.
Some free tiers are legitimate
A limited free plan from a transparent paid provider is different from an unknown free-only VPN. The key question is how the company funds the service.
