How to Update USB Drivers on Windows

When a USB flash drive, mouse, printer, dock, or hub stops showing up correctly, the device itself is not always the problem. Windows uses drivers for the attached device and separate drivers for the USB controllers inside the PC, so both sides are worth checking.

This guide applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11 on PCs where a USB device is missing, unstable, unusually slow, or marked with an error in Device Manager.

Does This Affect You?

USB trouble often looks like hardware failure: the device connects and disconnects, appears with a yellow warning mark, or works in one port but not another. A damaged cable or worn port can cause the same symptoms, but outdated, corrupted, or mismatched drivers are common enough that they should be handled early.

Update the Driver for the Problem Device

Start with the exact USB device that is failing. This keeps the fix focused before you reset every USB port on the computer.

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Look for the device. It may appear under Universal Serial Bus controllers, Disk drives, Mice and other pointing devices, Printers, or another hardware category. A problem device may show a yellow warning triangle.
  3. Right-click the device and choose Update driver.
  4. Select Search automatically for drivers and let Windows check for a newer driver.
  5. If Windows says the best driver is already installed but the device still fails, visit the device maker’s support site and look for a driver made for your exact model. Manufacturer downloads are often newer or more specific than the generic driver Windows finds.

Uninstall and Reinstall the USB Controllers

If several USB ports or devices are acting up, reset the controller drivers. Windows will rebuild them during the next startup.

  1. Open Device Manager and expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  2. Right-click each USB controller, hub, and root hub entry one at a time and choose Uninstall device. Confirm the uninstall, but do not select an option to remove driver software if Windows offers one.
  3. After the USB controller entries are removed, restart the PC.
  4. Windows detects the controllers again during startup and reinstalls fresh driver entries. Reconnect the USB device and test it again.

Check USB Power Management

On laptops especially, Windows may power down idle USB ports to save battery. That can make devices vanish or reconnect at random.

  1. In Device Manager, expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  2. Right-click each USB Root Hub entry and open Properties.
  3. Open the Power Management tab.
  4. Clear Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power, then click OK.
  5. Repeat for the other root hubs, restart the PC, and test the USB device again.

More Checks Before You Blame the Driver

Try Another Port and Cable

A weak cable, bent connector, dusty USB port, or overworked hub can behave exactly like a driver issue. Test the device in another port and, when possible, with another cable or directly connected to the PC instead of through a hub.

USB-C and Thunderbolt May Need Vendor Drivers

Some newer laptops need chipset, USB-C, or Thunderbolt controller drivers from the laptop maker before docks and USB-C accessories behave correctly. Check the support page for your exact laptop model if the problem is mostly with USB-C devices.

Roll Back a Recent Driver

If the device worked until a driver update, open the device properties in Device Manager, go to the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver if the button is available.

Look at Recent Windows Updates

When USB problems start immediately after Windows Update, check Settings > Windows Update > Update history. Also check Advanced options > Optional updates for a newer driver Microsoft released as a follow-up fix.
