How to Update HP Printer Firmware

HP printer firmware update progress

Firmware is the software inside an HP printer. It is separate from the printer driver on your computer and controls printer behavior such as Wi-Fi, features, cartridge communication, and internal fixes.

Does this affect you?

Use this if HP support recommended a firmware update, your HP DeskJet, OfficeJet, ENVY, or LaserJet has a bug fixed by firmware, or you need to troubleshoot a connection or feature problem.

Important warning before updating

Do not turn off the printer, unplug it, or disconnect Wi-Fi during a firmware update. Losing power or connection mid-update can leave the printer unfinished and may require professional service.

Update through the HP Smart app

This is usually the easiest method for home and small-office printers.

  1. Open HP Smart on Windows, Mac, iPhone, Android, or the device you use to manage the printer.
  2. Select the correct printer.
  3. Open Printer Settings, Support, Advanced Settings, or a similar area.
  4. Choose Update Firmware or Check for Updates.
  5. If an update is available, start it and wait. The printer may restart by itself.

Update from the printer control panel

Use this on HP printers with a touchscreen or menu display.

  1. Open Settings from the printer screen.
  2. Look under Printer Maintenance, Preferences, Tools, or Update the Printer.
  3. Make sure the printer has internet access.
  4. Choose Check for Updates and confirm installation if offered.
  5. Wait until the update finishes completely.

Update manually from HP Support

Use this when the printer cannot find updates itself or has no direct internet connection.

  1. Go to HP Support on a computer and search the exact printer model.
  2. Open Software and Drivers and look for Firmware.
  3. Download only firmware that matches your exact model number.
  4. Follow HP instructions, usually through a USB-connected installer or a USB drive loaded through the printer menu.
  5. Do not interrupt the update process.

More control

Downgrades usually are not simple

HP firmware normally cannot be rolled back through ordinary menus. If a version causes a new issue, check HP support before installing another update.

Third-party cartridges can be affected

Some firmware updates have changed how printers recognize non-HP or refilled cartridges. If you depend on them, read the release notes before updating.

Manual control is possible

If you do not want the printer installing firmware automatically, turn off automatic firmware updates in the printer settings.
