Dragging an app to Trash removes the application itself, but some Mac apps leave behind preferences, support folders, caches, and login items. Clearing those leftovers can help when reclaiming space or preparing for a clean reinstall.
This guide applies to recent macOS versions on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.
Does This Affect You?
Use the standard removal when you simply want the app gone. Use the extra cleanup steps when an app was large, broken, or likely to be reinstalled fresh.
Remove the App from Applications
- Quit the app first. Use Command + Q or quit from the Dock.
- Open Finder and select Applications.
- Drag the app to Trash or right-click it and choose Move to Trash.
- Enter an administrator password if requested.
- Empty Trash when you are sure you no longer need the app.
Use Storage Settings
- Open System Settings > General > Storage.
- Wait for macOS to calculate storage use.
- Open the Applications category.
- Select the app and use the delete option if available.
- Confirm the removal and check storage again afterward.
Remove Leftover Files
Preferences
In Finder, press Command + Shift + G and open ~/Library/Preferences. Look for files matching the app or developer name, often ending in .plist, then move them to Trash.
Application Support
Open ~/Library/Application Support and remove the app’s folder if it remains after uninstalling. This can contain larger saved data or resources.
Caches
Open ~/Library/Caches and remove cache folders tied to the app. Cache files are temporary and are recreated if the app is installed again.
Login Items
Check System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions and remove any startup item connected to the deleted app.
Optional Uninstaller Apps
