Uninstalling removes an app from Windows and usually removes most of its program files and settings. Some apps leave small folders or personal data behind so reinstalling later is easier.
This applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11, including Microsoft Store apps and traditional desktop programs.
Does This Affect You?
Use Settings first for most apps. Use Control Panel for older programs, and use troubleshooting/removal tools when a program refuses to uninstall.
Uninstall from Settings
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for the program if the list is long.
- On Windows 11, click the three dots beside it and choose Uninstall. On Windows 10, select it and click Uninstall.
- Confirm and follow any uninstaller wizard that appears.
- Restart if the app requests it.
Uninstall from Control Panel
- Open Control Panel.
- Go to Programs > Programs and Features.
- Right-click the program and choose Uninstall or Uninstall/Change.
- Follow the prompts.
When a Program Will Not Uninstall
- Open the install folder under
C:Program FilesorC:Program Files (x86)and look for uninstall.exe, uninst000.exe, or a similar uninstaller. - Run Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter from Microsoft Support.
- Try uninstalling in Safe Mode if background services block the removal.
- Check the software maker’s support site for a dedicated cleanup/removal tool.
Uninstall Notes
Leftover Folders Can Be Normal
Small folders in Program Files or AppData may hold logs, licenses, or settings. They are usually safe to ignore unless you are sure they belong to the removed app.
Reinstall, Then Uninstall
If Windows has lost the app’s uninstall registration, reinstalling the program can repair the entry so a normal uninstall works.
Bulk Uninstalling
Windows does not bulk uninstall multiple programs natively. Third-party uninstallers exist, but use reputable tools because they need broad system access.
Apps That Cannot Be Removed
Some Windows components have a disabled uninstall button. They may only be hidden or managed through optional feature settings.
