How to Sync Messages Between iPhone and Mac

Mac and iPhone Messages sync illustration

Messages stay aligned between iPhone and Mac when both devices use the same Apple Account and Messages in iCloud is enabled. Regular SMS and MMS messages also need Text Message Forwarding from the iPhone.

This guide applies to Messages on macOS and a recent iPhone signed in to the same Apple Account.

Does This Affect You?

Use these steps if messages read on iPhone still look unread on Mac, deleted threads return, attachments differ, or green-bubble texts never reach the Mac.

Turn On Messages in iCloud

On Mac

  1. Open Messages.
  2. Choose Messages > Settings.
  3. Open the iMessage tab.
  4. Confirm the Apple Account shown is the same one used on the iPhone.
  5. Enable Messages in iCloud.

On iPhone

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap your name.
  3. Open iCloud.
  4. Find Messages, using See All if needed.
  5. Turn Messages on.

The first sync can take a while if your message history contains many photos and videos.

Enable Text Message Forwarding

  1. On iPhone, open Settings > Messages.
  2. Tap Text Message Forwarding.
  3. Turn on the switch next to your Mac.
  4. Enter the verification code on your Mac if one appears.

Messages Sync Fixes

Match the Apple Account Exactly

The account in iPhone Settings must match the account in Mac Messages settings. Even a secondary email difference can cause confusion.

Check the Connection

Messages in iCloud syncs through Apple’s cloud service, so weak Wi-Fi, Airplane Mode, or no cellular data can delay updates.

Restart Sync on Mac

Turn off Messages in iCloud on the Mac, wait about a minute, then turn it back on. This can clear stuck conversations.

Check iCloud Storage

Messages can use iCloud storage. If the plan is full, syncing may stop until space is freed or the plan is upgraded.
