PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch all support playtime limits, age restrictions, and purchase controls, but each platform manages them differently. In most cases, restrictions attach to the child’s account rather than only the console.
These steps cover PS5, PS4, Xbox consoles, and Nintendo Switch. They assume the child has, or will get, their own account.

Set up Family Management on PlayStation
- Sign in with your adult PlayStation account in a browser or the PlayStation App.
- Open Family Management in account settings.
- Choose Add Family Member.
- Create a child account or add an existing one.
- Enter the child’s birth date accurately.
- Open the child’s profile and configure Playtime Restrictions, Age Level for PS Content, and Spending Limits.
- Have the child sign in on the PS5 or PS4 with their own account.
Because rules follow the account, they apply across PS5 and PS4 where that child signs in.
Use Xbox Family Settings
- Install the Xbox Family Settings app or go to account.microsoft.com/family.
- Sign in with your adult Microsoft account.
- Add a family member and create or add the child’s account.
- Open the child’s profile.
- Set screen time limits and allowed hours.
- Set content restrictions by age rating.
- Require approval for purchases if desired.
- Have the child sign in on Xbox with that account.
The same Microsoft family settings can apply across Xbox consoles the child uses.
Set up Nintendo Switch Parental Controls
- Install the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app on iOS or Android.
- Sign in with your Nintendo Account.
- On the Switch, open System Settings > Parental Controls.
- Choose Pair with Smart Device.
- Enter the code from the Switch into the phone app.
- Set play time limits, bedtime alarm, restriction level, online feature restrictions, and eShop purchase controls.
Nintendo’s controls are managed mainly through the mobile app after pairing.
Important limits
Content ratings differ by region and platform, so review what each age level actually allows instead of assuming the labels match perfectly.
Changes may take effect at the next sign-in or session rather than instantly cutting off a game already running.
Console controls apply to platform accounts. For a broader backup layer, many routers also offer device-level schedules and filtering.
