How to Set Up Cross-Save So Your Progress Follows You Between Platforms

Cross-save is handled by each game, not by one universal console or PC setting. Most games that support it sync progress through a publisher account linked to your platform accounts.

These steps apply to games that support cross-save across PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. Support varies by title.

Does this affect you?

Use this if you want the same save, character, inventory, or progress to follow you between platforms instead of starting over.

Confirm support and find the setting

  1. Check the game’s official support site or store page for cross-save, cross-progression, or cross-platform save.
  2. Open the game and look under Settings > Account, Online, or Profile.
  3. Find Link Account, Cross-Save, or Cross-Progression.
  4. Link your platform account to the publisher account, such as Epic, Ubisoft, EA, or a game-specific account.
  5. If you already played on another platform, sign in to that same publisher account instead of creating a new one.

Creating a new publisher account is one of the easiest ways to accidentally start with empty progress.

Link accounts in the right order

  1. Decide which platform currently has the progress you want to keep.
  2. Link that platform first.
  3. Confirm the game shows the correct account name or email after linking.
  4. On the second platform, link to the same publisher account.
  5. If asked whether to use local or cloud progress, choose the existing cloud progress if that is what you want to keep.
  6. Launch on the second platform and confirm the original progress appears before playing further.

Read conflict prompts carefully. Choosing the wrong save can overwrite newer progress in some games.

Fix cross-save not syncing

  • Make sure the game saved and synced before switching platforms.
  • Exit normally so cloud upload can finish.
  • Check that both platforms were online during save and sync.
  • Confirm both platforms are signed into the same linked account.
  • Check whether a shared family console is using a different profile.
  • If a conflict appears, choose the save with the correct timestamp and progress.

Some games sync only at checkpoints or on exit, not continuously.

Cross-save is not cross-play

Cross-play means playing together across platforms. Cross-save means moving progress across platforms. A game may support one, both, or neither.

Achievements and trophies are usually tracked separately by PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, and other platforms. Cross-save may move progress without unlocking every platform achievement automatically.

Some games offer a one-time transfer instead of live cross-save. If progress does not update after each session, check whether the game supports ongoing sync or only migration.
