How to Set the Default Audio Device on Windows

Windows audio device settings illustration

Windows uses separate default devices for sound output and microphone input. When headphones, Bluetooth speakers, HDMI displays, or USB microphones are connected, Windows may not choose the one you expect.

This guide applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Does This Affect You?

Use these steps when audio comes from the wrong speakers or the wrong microphone is selected during calls, recordings, or games.

Set Defaults in Settings

  1. Open Settings > System > Sound.
  2. Under Output, choose the speakers, headphones, monitor, or headset you want.
  3. Under Input, choose the microphone you want.
  4. Play audio or test the microphone to confirm. The change applies immediately.

Switch Output from the Taskbar

  1. Click the speaker icon in the taskbar.
  2. On Windows 11, click the small arrow beside the volume slider and choose an output device.
  3. On Windows 10, click the device arrow above the volume slider or open Sound settings from the speaker menu.
  4. Select the device you want to use now.

Extra Audio Options

Send Apps to Different Devices

Open Sound settings and use the volume mixer or app volume/device preferences to send one app to speakers while another uses a headset.

Device Listed but Silent

Run the Windows audio troubleshooter from Sound settings. It can catch muted channels, disabled devices, bad formats, or driver problems.

Bluetooth Must Be Connected

A Bluetooth headset can be paired but not connected. Open Bluetooth settings and confirm it says Connected before changing audio defaults.
