How to Set Alexa Reminders by Voice or App

Smart home troubleshooting category image

Alexa reminders speak a custom message at a time you choose. They are different from alarms, which mainly play a sound.

These steps apply to Echo devices and the Alexa app on iPhone and Android using the Amazon account signed into both.

Does this affect you?

Use this if you want Alexa to remind you to take out the trash, make a phone call, take medication, start dinner, or remember any other timed task.

Set a reminder by voice

Voice is the fastest option when you think of the task in the moment.

  1. Say Alexa, remind me to [task] at [time].
  2. For example, say Alexa, remind me to call the dentist at 2 PM.
  3. Listen while Alexa repeats the reminder back.
  4. If the time or wording is wrong, say Alexa, cancel that.
  5. For repeating reminders, include the pattern in the same command.
  6. For example, say Alexa, remind me to take my medication every day at 8 AM.

The reminder can speak on Echo devices tied to your account and can also appear as a phone notification if Alexa app notifications are enabled.

Set or manage reminders in the Alexa app

Use the app when you want to review, edit, or create reminders ahead of time.

  1. Open the Alexa app.
  2. Tap More.
  3. Tap Reminders & Alarms.
  4. Open Reminders.
  5. Tap +.
  6. Enter the reminder text.
  7. Set the date and time.
  8. Choose Repeat if needed.
  9. Tap Save.

To edit or delete a reminder, open it from the same Reminders list. You can also ask Alexa, what are my reminders? or Alexa, cancel my reminder to [task].

Fix missed reminders

  • Check the Echo volume; a reminder can play too quietly to notice.
  • Turn off Do Not Disturb for the device if reminders are being silenced.
  • Enable Alexa app phone notifications for reminders.
  • Make sure the Echo has a stable Wi-Fi connection at reminder time.
  • For shared households, check Household reminder settings in the Alexa app.

If you are part of an Amazon Household, some reminders can be shared so more than one person’s devices receive them. This is useful for family chores and shared routines.
