A true MacBook freeze means the pointer, trackpad, keyboard, Force Quit, and menus do not respond. At that point, forcing a restart may be the only way back, though unsaved work can be lost.
This guide applies to MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models with Apple Silicon or Intel processors.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if the entire MacBook is locked up, not merely one app. If Force Quit opens, close the problem app instead of restarting the whole Mac.
Confirm It Is Really Frozen
- Wait about 30 seconds in case the Mac is finishing a heavy save, wake, or update task.
- Try Command + Option + Escape for Force Quit.
- Listen for fans or check for signs of ongoing disk/work activity.
- Try the keyboard and trackpad one more time.
- If nothing responds, proceed to a force restart.
Force Restart the MacBook
Apple Silicon MacBook
- Press and hold the power button for about 10 seconds until the screen goes black.
- Release it and wait a few seconds.
- Press the power button again to start the Mac.
- Choose whether to reopen apps if macOS asks after startup.
Intel MacBook
- Hold the power button for about 10 seconds until the Mac shuts down.
- Wait a few seconds, then power it on again.
- If freezes recur quickly, consider an Intel SMC reset using the key combination for your model.
After It Restarts
Check Activity Monitor
Look at CPU and Memory while repeating the task that froze the Mac. A single app spiking before every freeze is a strong clue.
Check Console Reports
Open Console and review Crash Reports or Diagnostic Reports near the freeze time for app, extension, or driver clues.
Install Updates
Update macOS and App Store apps. Freezes tied to wake, displays, accessories, or one app are often fixed by later updates.
Run Apple Diagnostics
If full freezes happen repeatedly without a clear trigger, run Apple Diagnostics to check for hardware issues such as memory or storage problems.
