Resetting an Echo Dot can mean a quick power cycle or a full factory wipe. Use the power cycle first for glitches, and factory reset only when troubleshooting deeper problems or giving the device to someone else.
These steps apply to all Echo Dot generations, including 3rd, 4th, and 5th generation models.
Does this affect you?
Use this if the Echo Dot is frozen, stuck on a spinning light, not hearing Alexa, or ready to sell or give away. A soft reset keeps settings; a factory reset removes the account and Wi-Fi details.
Soft reset with a power cycle
This fixes many temporary glitches without erasing anything.
- Unplug the Echo Dot power adapter from the wall or from the device.
- Wait a full 30 seconds.
- Plug the adapter back in.
- Watch the light ring while it restarts.
- Give it 1 to 2 minutes to reconnect to Wi-Fi.
- Say Alexa to confirm it responds.
If the Echo Dot still does not respond, wait a few more minutes before moving to a factory reset because slow Wi-Fi reconnection can make it look stuck.
Factory reset the Echo Dot
Use this before handing the device to a new owner or when a power cycle does not fix a persistent issue.
- Open the Alexa app.
- Go to Devices > Echo & Alexa.
- Select the Echo Dot.
- Scroll down and tap Deregister.
- On most 2nd through 5th generation Echo Dots, hold Microphone Off and Volume Down together for about 20 seconds.
- Wait for the light ring to turn orange and spin.
- On a 1st generation Echo Dot, press and hold the small reset pinhole near the base with a paper clip until the ring turns orange.
- Let the device reboot into setup mode.
Deregistering matters before a handoff because it removes the Echo Dot from your Amazon account. After the factory reset, the device should not retain your Wi-Fi, account link, or voice history.
Set it up again
- Open the Alexa app.
- Tap Devices.
- Tap +.
- Choose Add Device.
- Select Amazon Echo.
- Follow the prompts to connect Wi-Fi and sign in.
Hold the reset buttons for the full 20 seconds; it often feels longer than expected. If the device never shows a light after repeated attempts with a known-good adapter, check Amazon warranty support because the Dot may have a hardware fault.
