
Your laptop battery drains quickly, will not hold a charge, or reports poor health, and you want to know whether replacing it yourself makes sense. This applies to laptops with removable batteries or internal batteries secured with screws. Glued-in ultra-thin models are better handled by a repair shop.

Laptop batteries wear out gradually. A machine that lasted all day when new may only last a couple of hours after years of cycles. Before buying a replacement, confirm the battery is truly worn instead of blaming background apps, screen brightness, or power settings.
Check Your Actual Battery Health
Windows can generate a battery report in a few seconds.
- Press Windows+R, type cmd, and press Enter.
- Run powercfg /batteryreport.
- Open the HTML report path shown in the window.
- Compare Design Capacity with Full Charge Capacity. If full charge capacity is roughly 60 to 70 percent of design capacity or lower, replacement can make a real difference.
- Review Battery life estimates to see how runtime has changed over time.
If the battery looks healthy but runtime is short, check startup apps, high screen brightness, browser load, and power mode before spending money on a new battery.
Before opening a laptop, shut it down fully, unplug the charger, hold the power button for 15 to 20 seconds after unplugging, and discharge static by touching bare metal. Never puncture, bend, crush, or pry against a lithium-ion battery. If the battery is swollen, puffy, or lifting the trackpad or keyboard, stop and have it removed professionally. Replace the Battery
Use instructions for your exact model because screw length, connector style, and adhesive layout vary.
- Order a genuine or reputable replacement battery matched to the exact laptop model or battery part number. Brand name alone is not specific enough.
- For an external removable battery, flip the laptop over, slide the release latch or latches, and lift the battery out.
- For an internal battery, remove the bottom-panel screws and keep them organized by position, then gently remove the panel.
- Disconnect the battery connector from the motherboard before removing the screws that hold the battery.
- Remove the battery screws. If adhesive strips are present, pull them slowly and evenly instead of yanking.
- Install the new battery, reconnect its cable, replace screws, and reinstall the bottom panel.
After replacement, charge the battery to 100 percent, then use the laptop normally until it drops near empty once. This first cycle helps the battery meter learn the new capacity.
Do not throw lithium-ion batteries in household trash. Use an electronics retailer, municipal battery program, or Call2Recycle drop-off point. To slow future wear, avoid constantly running to 0 percent or leaving the laptop at 100 percent for long periods when your model offers charge-limiting features.
