Envelope printing usually fails because the document is still set as normal paper or because the envelope is loaded in the wrong direction. The fix is to set the envelope size in software and follow the printer-specific loading icon.
Does this affect you?
Use this if envelopes jam, print in the wrong place, feed sideways, or come out with the address misaligned.
Set up envelope printing in Word
Word sets the page size and orientation together.
- Open Word and go to the Mailings tab.
- Click Envelopes.
- Enter the delivery address and return address if needed.
- Open Options and choose the correct envelope size, such as Size 10 for a U.S. business envelope.
- Open Printing Options and follow the loading diagram for your printer.
- Load the envelope exactly as shown and print.
Use the manual feed slot
Many printers handle envelopes best one at a time through a manual slot.
- Look for the envelope icon and arrow near the manual feed slot.
- Insert one envelope in the exact orientation shown.
- In the print dialog, choose the manual or envelope feed tray.
- Set paper size to the matching envelope size.
- Send the print job and wait for the printer to pull the envelope.
More control
Flatten the flap
A curled flap catches rollers easily. Press the flap crease flat before loading.
Feed a small number at a time
Envelopes are thicker than paper. Even printers with envelope trays often work better with one or two at once.
Test window envelopes
For window envelopes, print one test first and confirm the address lands fully inside the window.
Wrong position means size or orientation mismatch
If every envelope prints in the wrong spot, recheck the software envelope size and the printer loading diagram before adjusting margins manually.
