You want to use a Bluetooth speaker with a Windows laptop or desktop, but it does not show up, pairing hangs, or sound still plays from the computer speakers. This applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11 PCs with built-in Bluetooth or a USB Bluetooth adapter, and to common speaker brands such as JBL, Bose, Sony, Anker, and Ultimate Ears.
Does This Affect You?
Bluetooth speaker setup usually takes a minute or two. Problems usually come from the speaker not being in pairing mode, being connected to another device, a stale Windows pairing record, or Windows using the wrong audio output after pairing.
Pair the Speaker for the First Time
You usually need to do this only once for each speaker.
- Turn on the speaker and put it in pairing mode. Usually this means holding the Bluetooth button until an LED flashes or a voice prompt plays.
- On the PC, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
- Turn Bluetooth on.
- Click Add device and choose Bluetooth.
- Select the speaker when its model name appears.
- Wait for Windows to show it as connected and for the speaker to beep or announce the connection.
Speaker Will Not Show Up or Will Not Finish Pairing
Try these in order.
- Put the speaker back into pairing mode immediately before clicking Add device. Many speakers broadcast for only 60 to 120 seconds.
- Disconnect it from nearby phones, tablets, or other computers. Many speakers stay attached to the last device and will not pair with a new one until freed.
- Remove a stuck Windows pairing by opening Bluetooth settings, selecting the speaker, choosing Remove device, and pairing again from the beginning.
- Toggle Bluetooth off in Windows, wait about 10 seconds, and turn it back on.
- Update the Bluetooth adapter driver in Device Manager under Bluetooth.
Pairing and playback output are separate. After the speaker connects, click the speaker icon in the taskbar or open Sound settings and select the Bluetooth speaker as the output device. Windows may otherwise keep using the laptop speakers or monitor audio.
Most speakers reconnect automatically to the most recent paired device when powered on and in range. If the speaker has been paired with many devices, its saved-device list may be full. Check the manual for a factory reset or clear-pairing-list button combination. On Mac, the process is similar: put the speaker in pairing mode, open Bluetooth settings, and click Connect.
