Modern GPUs are built to run warm under load. Many cards sit around 65 to 83 C while gaming. The concern is sustained unusually high temperatures, loud fans, or performance drops as the card throttles itself.
These steps apply to Windows desktop PCs with NVIDIA or AMD graphics cards, with some notes for gaming laptops.

Use this if the GPU gets hot during games, fans become very loud, or frame rate drops after the system warms up.
Check the actual temperature
- Install MSI Afterburner or GPU-Z.
- Enable an on-screen overlay for temperature, fan speed, and clock speed if using Afterburner.
- Play a demanding game for 15 to 20 minutes.
- Note the highest sustained temperature, not just a brief spike.
- Compare it with normal temperatures for your exact GPU model.
- Watch whether clock speed drops as temperature rises.
A performance drop as temperatures climb is thermal throttling. That is the clearest sign cooling needs attention.
Bring temperatures down
- Clean dust from case intake and exhaust vents.
- Use compressed air in short upright bursts on GPU fans and case filters.
- Move the PC away from walls or enclosed desk cabinets.
- Make sure front intake and rear or top exhaust paths are clear.
- Use MSI Afterburner to set a more aggressive fan curve.
- Cap frame rate near your monitor refresh rate so the GPU does not render unnecessary frames.
Dust and poor airflow are the most common reasons temperatures slowly rise over months.
Undervolting and room conditions
Undervolting can reduce voltage at a given clock speed, lowering heat and fan noise with little performance loss. Make small changes, test stability in real games, and back off if crashes appear.
Room temperature matters. A PC in a hot room runs hotter than the same PC in winter or air conditioning. Better room ventilation can help more than another software setting.
Laptop and older GPU notes
Gaming laptops share small cooling systems between CPU and GPU. Use a hard flat surface, avoid beds and couches, clean vents, and consider a cooling pad if temperatures stay high.
On older GPUs, thermal paste can dry out and reduce heat transfer. Replacing paste requires opening the graphics card and is not a beginner task; a repair shop is safer if cleaning and fan curves do not help.
