The Mac menu bar normally stays at the top of the screen. You can set it to hide automatically until the pointer reaches the top edge, or turn that behavior off if it disappeared unexpectedly.
This guide applies to recent macOS versions on internal and external displays.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if you want more vertical space, prefer a cleaner screen, or cannot figure out why the menu bar is no longer visible.
Turn On Menu Bar Auto-Hide
- Open Apple menu > System Settings.
- Click Control Center.
- Scroll to the Menu Bar section.
- Enable Automatically hide and show the menu bar.
- Move the pointer away from the top to hide it, then move back to the top edge to reveal it.
Bring Back a Missing Menu Bar
- Move the pointer to the very top edge and pause.
- If it appears, turn off auto-hide in Control Center settings if you do not want that behavior.
- If you are in a full-screen app, press Control + Command + F or move the pointer to the top and exit full screen.
- Restart the Mac if the menu bar seems missing because of a display or rendering glitch.
Menu Bar Notes
External Displays
Auto-hide applies to all connected displays. Each display can have a menu bar, but the show/hide behavior follows the same setting.
Organize Icons
Hold Command and drag menu bar icons to rearrange them. Some can be dragged off the bar; others are controlled in System Settings > Control Center.
Stage Manager and Full Screen
Full-screen apps and some Stage Manager behavior can hide the menu bar independently of the normal auto-hide setting.
One-App Problems
If the menu looks wrong only in one app, check that app’s View or Window settings because some apps draw custom title/menu areas.
