
You want the speed of an SSD without reinstalling Windows, apps, settings, and files from scratch. Cloning copies the existing Windows drive onto the new SSD so the computer can boot from it like the old drive. This applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11 desktops and laptops.
Does This Affect You?
Cloning is best when the current Windows installation works well and you simply want faster storage. It copies the operating system, programs, documents, settings, partitions, and boot data. If the existing install is messy or corrupted, a clean Windows install may be a better long-term choice.
Clone the Drive with Software
Connect the new SSD externally first so you can clone before opening the computer.
- Confirm the SSD is large enough for the used space on the old drive. Many free tools struggle to clone to a smaller destination unless they support “used space only” cloning.
- Connect the SSD with a USB-to-SATA adapter or an external enclosure.
- Use cloning software from the SSD maker if available, such as Samsung Data Migration, Crucial software, or Western Digital tools. General tools such as Macrium Reflect or EaseUS Todo Backup can also work.
- Choose the old hard drive as the source and the new SSD as the destination. Double-check this step carefully.
- Start the clone and leave the PC alone until it finishes. Depending on data size and USB speed, it can take from minutes to several hours.
- When the tool reports completion, safely eject and disconnect the SSD.
Cloning overwrites the destination drive. Anything already on the new SSD will be erased. We provide no warranty; proceed at your own risk and make sure important files are backed up before cloning.
The next steps involve opening the computer. Shut it down, unplug it, ground yourself by touching bare metal, and handle drives by their edges. Keep the old drive safe after removal so it can serve as a temporary backup.
Swap in the Cloned SSD
After the clone, replace the old drive or adjust boot order to use the SSD.
- Open the desktop side panel or the laptop bottom panel/drive bay cover according to the model instructions.
- Disconnect SATA data and power from the old hard drive, then remove it from its bay.
- Mount the SSD in the same location. Desktop towers may need a 2.5-inch to 3.5-inch adapter bracket.
- Connect the same SATA data and power cables to the SSD.
- Close the case, reconnect power, and start the computer. It should boot to the same Windows desktop, programs, and files.
- If you see “no bootable device,” enter BIOS/UEFI and put the SSD first in the boot order.
Windows normally enables TRIM for SSDs automatically. To check, open Command Prompt as administrator and run fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify. A result of 0 means TRIM is enabled.
Because the old drive is an exact copy, keep it untouched for a few weeks in case something on the SSD looks wrong. After you trust the new setup, you can reformat the old drive for secondary storage or keep it as a backup.
