How to Clean a Mechanical Keyboard: Sticky and Dirty Keys

One or more keys feel sticky, take extra pressure, or double-type, and you can see grime around the keycaps. This guide applies to mechanical keyboards with removable keycaps. Membrane and laptop keyboards should use only the surface-cleaning parts unless the manufacturer specifically says otherwise.

Does This Affect You?

Dust, crumbs, skin oils, pet hair, and drink residue collect around keycaps over time. On mechanical boards, that debris can settle around the switch stem and housing, making a key feel gritty, slow, or inconsistent even when the top of the keyboard does not look terrible.

Quick Surface Clean: No Disassembly

Start here. Loose debris often causes gritty keys and can be removed without pulling anything apart.

  1. Unplug the keyboard, or turn it off and remove batteries if it is wireless.
  2. Turn it upside down over a trash can and gently tap or shake it so loose crumbs fall out.
  3. Use short bursts of compressed air between rows from a low angle, moving across the board.
  4. Lightly dampen a microfiber cloth with 90 percent or higher isopropyl alcohol and wipe the key tops, key sides, and exposed plate areas. Do not use water or household cleaner.
  5. Use a clean soft brush to loosen dust between keys, then remove it with low suction or another short air pass.

Keep liquid away from connected electronics. Use alcohol sparingly, never pour it into switches, and let the keyboard dry fully before reconnecting it. These steps are at your own risk; if the keyboard is under warranty or has severe spill damage, contact the maker.

Remove Keycaps and Clean the Switches

For keys that remain sticky or double-type, the grime may be under the keycap.

  1. Use a wire keycap puller. Pulling caps off by hand can stress or crack the stem.
  2. Hook the puller under the keycap and pull straight up with a slight gentle wiggle. Keep the keycaps in order, because rows can have different shapes.
  3. Take a photo before removing many keys so you can restore the layout correctly.
  4. With the cap off, wipe the exposed switch stem with a cotton swab lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol. Avoid flooding the switch housing.
  5. Wash removed keycaps separately in warm water with a tiny amount of mild dish soap, scrub gently, rinse, and let them dry for several hours until completely dry.
  6. Press the dry keycaps back onto the switches, matching the row profile and orientation.

If a key remains sticky after cleaning, the problem may be inside the switch. Sugary spills often leave residue deeper than a cotton swab can reach. On a hot-swappable keyboard, replacing one switch is usually easier than repeated cleaning. On soldered boards, the switch may need desoldering or professional repair.

Large keys such as Space, Enter, Shift, and Backspace use stabilizers. If those feel scratchy or uneven, the stabilizer wire may need cleaning or a small amount of appropriate lubricant, which is a more involved job than basic keyboard cleaning.
