The default browser is the app macOS opens when you click a web link in Mail, Messages, documents, notes, and many other apps. Changing it takes one setting, but the browser must already be installed.
This guide applies to recent macOS versions on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.
Does This Affect You?
Use this if links keep opening in Safari when you prefer Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Arc, or another browser, or if you want to switch back to Safari.
Change the Default Browser in System Settings
- Install the browser you want and open it at least once.
- Open Apple menu > System Settings.
- Click Desktop & Dock.
- Scroll to Default web browser.
- Choose the browser from the dropdown.
- Confirm the prompt if macOS asks. The change applies immediately.
Change It from the Browser
- Open the browser you want as default.
- Open that browser’s settings.
- Find Default browser. Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and others usually include this shortcut.
- Click Make default or the equivalent button.
- Confirm any macOS prompt.
Browser Default Notes
Data Does Not Move Automatically
Changing the default browser does not transfer bookmarks, passwords, history, or extensions. Each browser keeps its own data unless you import it.
Some Apps Override the System Default
Corporate tools, chat apps, and some email clients may have their own link-opening setting. If only one app ignores the Mac default, check that app’s preferences.
Switch Back Anytime
Return to System Settings > Desktop & Dock and choose Safari or another browser from the same menu.
iPhone and iPad Are Separate
Changing the Mac default does not change iOS or iPadOS. Those devices have their own Default Browser App setting under the browser app’s settings.
